If you could pick a cartoon world to live in, which would it be? Why?

The world of Edward Gorey, of course. Because I like a place with huge urns and dead vines and creeping shadows and children who die of ennui.
What is your favorite greasy spoon?

Jack's. In Skokie or maybe Lincolnwood, Ill. Jack's was (is?) the unbearably smoky 24-hour diner where we hung out in college. You needed a car or a friend with a car to get there, so it had a certain mystique. And their bread basket had the best damn bialy sticks west of New York. The waitresses wore those pink checked diner-waitress uniforms. And they knew us, and they'd sit down to chat when they took our orders. It's amazing I ever wondered how I gained so much weight in college.
Ever run for office? (School, club, organization, politics, etc.) Did you get elected?
In high school I was elected sophomore class president. That was about 16 years ago! I just saw my vice-president a couple of weekends ago. But in general, my mom and my sister are the politicians in the family. They have both won and lost their fair share of elections.

What was your very first job?
Submitted by Laurel.
Funny that this question appears today, since it's my last full day at the job I've held for eight years.
The very very first time I got a paycheck was in elementary school. I spent two hours doing some work at school -- checking people in for an event -- and was paid either $8 or $16 for my efforts. In high school, all my jobs were borrrrring data-entry-type stuff. In college, I made $7/hour (which was a TON of money) working in the academic technology lab. Basically teaching faculty how to use computers, scanners, etc.
I had an editorial internship at Cat Fancy magazine my senior year of college. I worked on the magazine and helped launch web sites for Cat Fancy and Dog Fancy. That was my first real office setting. Does that count?
Two days after I graduated from college, fresh journalism degree in hand, I started as a content producer at huge media conglomerate in Chicago. I edited content for the web. I remember editing a lot of horoscopes. I will always consider this to be my first real job.
Then I moved to San Francisco in 1998 and got a new job, where I've been for eight years. I turn in my keys tomorrow!
How did you meet your best friend(s)?
I was introduced to Dave over email by a mutual friend whom I had met on a listserv (4AD-L). Dave and I arranged to meet in person for lunch at Clarke's in June 1994. When he came to pick me up in his dad's LeSabre, I was blasting Stereolab and didn't hear him ring my buzzer, so I think he walked right in. Three years and three months later, we got married.
What's the most memorable building you've lived in?
Submitted by Shelly.
The house where I grew up. It was built in 1938 out of recycled concrete that used to pave Route 66.
